Sophie Xarhakos is a ceramic artist living in Melbourne Australia.
She completed a Bachelor of Education Art and Craft in 1979 majoring in ceramics and for many years pursued a career in arts and entertainment marketing.
In recent years she returned to her ceramic practice and expanded on her knowledge by undertaking tuition and training in the area of mould making and slip casting.
She involves herself in all aspects of her craft and her ceramic practice encompasses a range of techniques.
From design of the prototype to her finished work the process includes wheel throwing, modelling, hand carving and turning and finally moulds that are utilised for her slip casting.
Creatively, her work is greatly influenced by patterns and textures and features organic earthy tones.
She utilises porcelain slip stained with various colourants and experiments with both the application and erosion of colour.
Her pieces are designed to reflect a balance and harmony and consideration is given to how her pieces sit alongside each other.
She constantly seeks to expand and refine her skills and has a strong desire to continue the tradition of mould making and slip cast ceramics.
Sophie is available for private tuition.
